How to Start Your Own Pet Grooming Business

Have you ever thought about running your own pet grooming business?    In 2009, pet owners in the U.S. spent 45 billion dollars on products and services for their pets, and in 2010 the projected number is 47.7 billion dollars.  We are a country that loves and cares for the comfort and well being of our pets!    It is not unusual to find pet-friendly outdoor restaurants that offer iced water bowls and treats to include your pet in the dining experience, and hotels are also becoming pet-friendly by offering free stays for Fido while hooking him up with pillow services, doggie baskets and spa appointments with a dog masseuse.  Hydrotherapy, aromatherapy and Yoga to pamper and connect with your dog are also new trends in luxury pet care. Pet businesses collectively represent the 7th largest retail segment in the U.S. – and that segment is still growing!  If you have a passion for pets and an entrepreneurial spirit, now is the time to start a business doing what you love.    The profit margin for a pet care business can be as much as 68 percent. But like any small business, a successful grooming salon requires a business strategy and plan. Before taking the leap into the pet grooming business, look into the following areas to map out a plan for your dream pet spa.

Conducting Market Research for a Pet Grooming Business:

Focus your research on industry trends, customer needs, and your local competition. Enroll in professional associations, newsletters and blogs and become part of the conversation; insider industry information is disseminated through these channels. Discover which services and products customers value in the pet grooming salon by talking to pet owners and spa owners. Visit your competition as a customer to see what services they offer and what you can bring to the industry that sets you apart from the other service providers. If an area is saturated with grooming salons, consider a mobile grooming business.

Licensing for Small Pet Grooming Businesses:

Increase the credibility of your grooming services with dog grooming certifications and professional training provided by the National Dog Groomers Association of America.  Also check with your state to learn the specific regulations and permits required in your area.

Developing an Integrated Marketing Plan:

The ultimate goal of any small business is to turn a profit while offering a quality service. An integrated marketing plan combines four core components to make your small business successful. These are Products and Services, Price, Promotion and Distribution.  What specific services will you provide?  In the grooming business  you can have a basic bath, cut, dry and nail clip service or you can include more trendy stylized services like fur dying.  Your market research should guide these decisions. Consider the cost of equipment, the venue and overhead required to provide these services.  Will you sell products in your spa? A sizeable 10 billion dollars was spent in 2009 on pet products!

Promotion:

How will you market your new pet grooming business?  You might want to consider a mixture of  traditional print media and 21st century technologies to get the word out on your salon. Posting flyers in veterinarian offices and pet stores will target customers in your community directly.  Direct mail marketing and newspaper classified ads are also effective marketing strategies.  These days, most people seeking information turn to the Internet.  Building a website and joining social media sites like Facebook and Twitter are great ways to generate word of mouth business.  There are some online companies, such as demandmart.com, that offer online marketing suites for small businesses that facilitate coupon promotions, customer loyalty programs, virtual storefronts and other SEO marketing tools, all in one in place, to bring you more customers from the Internet.

Distribution:

How you distribute your services depends on the need in your area, the nature of your pet grooming services, and the type of customer service and vision you have for your pet spa.  There are a variety of ways to service your clients. Some options include a storefront – preferably high traffic areas where people will see your business -your home, a partnership with a veterinarian or pet shop, or a mobile grooming business where you bring your services to your clients.

These are just a few tips for conceptualizing a pet-grooming salon.   As a small business owner, the important thing to remember is to provide quality services and products without growing too rapidly. The pet grooming industry offers many resources online, in print and across the country in expos and conventions to support your business and the industry. Now is the time to turn your passion for furry companions into a lucrative pet grooming business – and anything that improves the health, behavior and overall well being of  your pet has potential for success!

Tips For Training Your Puppy

Although there are many Golden Retriever training tips, teething is the most common. Golden Retriever puppies love to chew, and will chew anything they can get. Although chewing toys are preferred, there’s a simple way that you are able to help your Golden Retriever fulfill his natural instinct to chew, and help him to ease the pain of teething as well.

To get started, simply fill an old sock you have with several ice cubes. Next, put a knot in the sock and place the sock with the cubes in the freezer. When your puppy starts to chew on things, simply provide him with the sock. You can continue to keep several socks with ice in it in your freezer if you want, so your puppy will always have a chew toy. Although this really is great to use, you should never leave your puppy alone whilst with sock. He could wind up chewing the sock and swallowing pieces of it, which could lead to very serious health problems.

Leashes

During leash training, a lot of people choose to attach the leash to the dog then drag him in the direction they wish him to go. This isn’t the best way of training a Golden Retriever, as it often sends the wrong signal to the puppy. Instead, you need to first get your puppy accustomed to the collar as well as theleash. You are able to do this by putting his collar and leash on inside the house and outdoors within a secured area, so that he can walk around and move about freely with the leash on, dragging it alongside him.

Once you’ve given him a little while, pick the leash up, then start calling him to you. Once he comes up to you, start praising him for it, so he knows that he’s on the right track. Always be patient when leash training, because it will take a long time for him to get accustomed to it. If you carry on andpraise him when they are doing it right and continue giving him time to get accustomed to the leash, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Digging around

Digging is one thingthat Golden Retrievers love, which is essential to their nature. Digging could be somewhat frustrating if you don’t give your Golden Retriever an area to himself, as he will dig holes in the yard. If you keep your puppy indoors, he might try to dig in the floor, on the couch, or on the bed. Digging is part of their nature, and you should never punish a Golden Retriever for digging.

To assist him fill this need, you need to provide him an area to dig in. You could get him a kiddie pool or sandbox, filling it with either soil or sand. Then, try burying a doggy treat or toy inside, so your dog will dig to get it out. Once he learns this is where he should dig, he will more than likely head to that area when he has the need to dig. Later on, when he becomes a bit older, you need to invest in Golden Retriever obedience training classes that will help him to get his digging habits under control.

The above mentioned tips will help a lot when training your Golden Retriever puppy. Golden Retrievers are great dogs, although you’ll require a bit of patience with them. Even though they’re very smart dogs, it may take them time for them to learn. Once they start learning however – they are going to become an integral part of your family that you couldn’t begin to live without.

Dog First Aid – Impalement

Bleeding wounds, various nicks and cuts, fractures…these are only some of the common injuries dogs have but impalement injuries is not really a common injury of dogs. But considering the highly active and playful behavior of a dog, impalement injuries are bound to happen. Dogs get into different scrapes and sustain different kinds of injuries. The conditions arising from the pet’s ingestion of poisonous substances or foreign objects that caused a blockage in the airways would make an owner consider the true condition of the pet before treatment can be administered. An impalement injury will be easily noticed so that the dog owner will not wonder what accident happened to the pet.

Falling from heights is one of the most common cause of impalement injuries as the dog can be speared by a tree branch or a fence. A dog running with a stick in the mouth can be impaled as well if the end of the stick is shoved into the ground. Dogs have the inclination to roam and one that has trespassed and destroyed other people’s property can be meet a sad fate from the arrow of an irate person.

The impalement injury can be so serious to cause the death of the dog. A dog would be so lucky to have a minor impalement injury. Professional medical attention will be necessary for serious and not so serious impalement injuries. The owner that has managed to remove the stick that has impaled the dog on the chest may think that a vet’s attention is no longer necessary. A seemingly minor impalement injury can in fact cause severe damage. The stick that has impaled the dog can possibly pierce a vital organ. The object that has pierced the skin may have impaled an internal organ and cause serious internal bleeding.

Before bringing the pet to a veterinary facility first aid measures are very necessary to prevent the object that has impaled from creating further damage.

Dogs in pain can turn aggressive and an impalement injury would certainly cause the dog immense pain. Muzzle the injured dog before administering first aid treatment. The foreign body that was stuck into the dog must not be removed. A dog owner’s most important role is to calm the pet as unnecessary movements can jar the foreign object and cause more damage. Moving the foreign object stuck into the dog could cause more internal damage. The impaled dog though can be removed from a stationary object like the steel bar on a fence. Once the pet was removed from the stationary object, first aid measures to control the bleeding must be administered while the pet is being transported to the hospital.

Personalized Leather Dog Collars

When shopping for a collar for your dog there are several types sold on the market today and finding the right one for your dog may not be easy. The truth is that no one collar is right for every dog. So, taking the time to research the wide variety of collars available and how they are used is an essential part of finding the perfect collar for your pet. That being said let’s examine some of the most commonly used collars.

These collars are one of the sturdiest and longest lasting collars available.  They come in a variety of styles and sizes ranging from the narrower rolled leather collar to wide 2 inch collars.  A leather collar can be just plain leather or embelished with rhinestones, studs or decorative conches.  You can even find customized leather collars with your pets name in letters that slide onto the collar.

A rolled leather collar is perfect for smaller dogs and can prevent the hair breakage that can be caused from the flat leather collars.  They are usually softer and more comfortable for your dog.  They fasten with a buckle and come with several holes so you can adjust the size as your pets neck grows.

Even though leather collars cost more than a standard nylon collar they are well worth it because they are much better quality and will last longer.

Flat Buckle collar

This collar is commonly made of colorful nylon and comes in different sizes and thicknesses and is an easy fit to any size dog.  They can also be made of leather or cotton.  No matter what other type of collar you choose to use with your dog this is an excellent collar for your pet to wear as it is easy to attach medical and identifying information to this collar. It is also the best collar to use on a young puppy to get them used to wearing a collar.

For many dogs this may be the only type of collar you will ever need. To ensure this collar fits correctly it should be placed high on the neck and you should be able to slip two fingers between the collar and the dogs neck. A too tight collar may interfere with your dogs ability to eat or breath and having one too loose will make it possible for him to slip out of the collar. So adjusting this type of collar is important.

The slide choke chain

The slide choke chain commonly called a choke collar is designed for training your dog. This collar will pinch the bronchial nerve in the dogs neck if he tugs on the leash while being walked. Unless used properly this collar can damage the dogs trachea. Additionally, do not leave a dog unsupervised while wearing this type of collar or the collar could get hung up on a tree limb, fence or other obstacle and the dog could choke to death.

If you are planning on using this type of collar for training your dog then you should seek a professionals advice on how to use this collar the right way. You should also remove this collar as soon as the training lesson is complete and replace it with a flat collar or some other safe collar.

Break away collar

The break away collar is becoming more popular with people who leave their dog outside in a fenced in yard to play. These collars let you attach tags with medical information and identification in case the dog should somehow get out of the enclosure and also provides a margin of safety in case he gets hung up while playing.

This collar is specifically designed with a special mechanism so if too much pressure is applied to the collar the collar will release, freeing the dog and thus preventing accidental hanging of your dog. For this reason it does not make a good training collar as a quick tug on the collar could let the dog to break free.

Puppies are the cutest pet animals in the world. Almost everyone adores cute little puppies. Their behaviour is almost exactly similar to the human babies, and this makes them even more adorable and lovable by everyone. Many people love to keep puppies as pet in their home and are very excited about giving them a name just as we are curious and eager about giving our newly born babies a name.

In order to avoid certain viral diseases which could treaten the life of your puppy, you should always make sure to get them vaccinated and only give them healthy foods . Also, it is important to learn and know about the behaviour of puppies before you keep them as a pet so as to make sure that you are well aware about their certain gestures and needs.

Puppies usually moan when they feel hungry or thirsty. Moreover, they complain and feel uneasy when they feel cold, hot, or are uneasy about something. They also whine when they are upset or are left alone for a longer period of time. All these behaviours require you to pay them extra consideration and attention so as to make sure that you fulfil all their needs accordingly and responsibly.

It is also significant to provide them food at regular times each day so as to adjust their potty timings; otherwise they may mess around in the house or other undesired places. Just like human babies, puppies also require toys to play around during the day. Moreover, you must also provide them ample space to play around easily. Another important thing is a puppy bed so as to assign them a proper and comfortable space to sleep. Along with all these necessary facilities, it is also important to make your puppy learn and develop social skills of behaving, responding, and adjusting to your social and home environment.

Basic requirements to keep your dog happy

If you’re a dog enthusiast, with them at your residence, you want to keep them pleased and healthful. Healthier dogs ordinarily are not difficult to find once you know how to keep them moving and feeding on the proper food products. In the same way the human body requires nutrition and exercise, content and healthy dogs need to have exactly the same. The best part is that healthy dogs live longer, and will continue to be devoted to you for his or her life expectancy. Better still, owning healthy dogs is not that difficult to do as long as you make time needed to help them along.

Healthy dogs require immunizations, exactly like human infants do. It is important that you take a new dog or puppy straight to the vet for a examination. For those who have a puppy dog, they may have to get their shots. In case your dog has recently had shots, take the records along with you to make sure they are up to date and have had all of the proper ones required. If you want healthy dogs, this really is something that is a must. You’ll find shots for disorders that may otherwise be lethal to your pet, and you want to protect them from all of these.

You must feed your pets the right food also. In most cases, any dog food available on the market can help you own healthier dogs, but it never hurts to spend a little more cash on food to ensure they are receiving the correct nourishment from their everyday meals. Healthy dogs also have to have a good amount of water, plus they must always enjoy a source of clean and cool water there when needed.

Healthy dogs also need a very good exercise program to help keep them strong and energetic. An active dog lives longer, and also creates a superior pet. For many canines, everyday walks are perfect, and can be the sole physical exercise they need to remain healthy and active. This is dependent upon how often you walk them and just how far you go. One trip around the block most likely are not enough. If you have a yard, be certain your dogs are able to hang out there, and make sure they are up and moving about. Simple games that have them running may very well be all they need.

It doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you end up picking, as long as they’re doing it. I have seen advertisements for treadmill machines for dogs, though honestly, I can’t envision any dogs I’ve ever met using them. Rather than spending money on gadgets, get out there and walk your pets. Make sure your dogs eat well, get going, have ample drinking water, and get good care from a veterinarian, and you can know you’ve done your best to ensure your dogs are healthy dogs. Keeping your dog clean is also very important for good health. A Dog Grooming Tub can be a great aid to help you make this task safe and easy.

Seizure Causing Foods Every Dog Owner Should Know About

It is my opinion that traditional dog food sold in most stores leads to a great number of ailments in dogs. I even think it might be a reason why my dog has seizures. The reason I came to that conclusion is that Cory’s seizures gradually were reduced once we stopped feeding him kibble and canned dog food, until they stopped completely over 5 years ago, without ever putting him on anti-epileptic drugs. But, did you know that there are other foods that can harm your dog’s health, even causing seizures in dogs? There are a few of these that really took me by surprise.

* Chocolate Foods. Nearly all pets owners are aware that chocolate can lead to seizures and to death for dogs. I’ll never forget the day that Cory found Jayson’s stash of Halloween chocolate. By the time Jayson had discovered him, Cory had his head deep inside the bowl of chocolate candy bars, tail just wagging back and forth, as he had already eaten quite a bit of it before his discovery. Immediately, Jayson called poison control and followed their instructions to pour hydrogen peroxide down Cory’s throat, which in turn, induced vomiting. Happily I had Hydrogen Peroxide in the cupboard where I keep first aid supplies. My son performed this emergency procedure outdoors. Fortunately, Jayson found out about the incident quickly enough to ensure that no harm was done. If ever you suspect your dog to have gotten into and eaten chocolate, don’t hesitate to call your vet immediately. Otherwise, if you see your dog eating it, you can use the Hydrogen Peroxide solution. Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate.

* Any product containing Onion Powder or an Onion itself. These contain sulfoxides and disulfides which can cause damage to the red blood cells, resulting in the dog becoming anemic.

* Raw Fish is off limits. Especially here in the Pacific Northwest, salmon and other fish often carry a fluke which in turn carries a bacteria which can cause seizures and death if consumed raw. If you make sure the fish is fully cooked, this bacteria is eliminated, but you still need to take care to remove every single bone from the fish prior to giving it to your dog. I am no scientist and don’t have the specific formula, but I have heard it said that if you freeze the fish at a certain temperature, the extreme cold will kill off the fluke and destroy the bacteria, thus eliminating the problem, you’ll have to do the research for length of time and the required temperature before you try this.

* Nutmeg. It never really crossed my mind to put nutmeg on Cory’s food, not even at the holidays, but it has been shown to cause tremors, seizures, and yes, even death. No more sharing those cookies with your buddy unless you are sure that they don’t contain nutmeg, I think you’ll be just fine on this one.

* Mushrooms. There are mushrooms out there, especially the ones found in the wild, that contain toxins that have been shown to cause problems for canines. I knew this and was alert to keeping Cory away from mushrooms on our walks. ‘Leave it’ is a great command to teach your dog early.

* Food Made for Cats Cory is not going to like it that I found out about this one, as he loves to lick the kitty’s plate after she finishes her canned food. Cat food is made with too many fats and too high a protein content for dogs to eat. OK, maybe he can still lick the kitty’s plate, but don’t substitute cat food as meal for your pup.

* Apple Seeds are specific no-no’s. Fruit pits and apple seeds all have cyanide in then, and that leads to seizures.

* Grapes and Raisins. About the time that I discovered this information, I was reading a training book for dogs that actually advocated using raisins as training treats, even though they can cause kidney failure in dogs. Needless to say, the author was defensive when I contacted her with this knowledge and my concerns, stating that she had always used raisins as training treats for her dogs. All I can say is be aware of the risks and do more research before giving grapes or raisins to your dog.

* Egg whites. You are certainly able to give your dog full eggs that include both the whites and the yolks; however, it is not safe to allow him to eat just the whites. This is because egg whites include a protein called avidin, which takes important B vitamins away from your dog’s body. The good news is that the yolk contains the antidote to this protein, and so serving the egg in its entirety is nothing to concern yourself over.
